Where are you from?

Auditory hallucinations are a characteristic symptom of schizophrenia, since 70% of patients present it, as indicated Olga Brotons, from the University Clinical Hospital . However, it is possible that the origin of these is not only part of a mental problem and that anyone can experience them at some point in their lives.

Auditory verbal hallucinations are defined as those subjective perceptions in the form of external conversations that occur in the absence of real stimuli. For the person who lives them, it can be an unwanted and disturbing problem, since they are presented in an intrusive and unintentional way.

These hallucinations can vary from a conversation, where there are voices in different tones and accents, to simple sounds of an environment; but everything comes from inside the person even if it is real for her.

Where are you from?

According to a study presented in the magazine Brain Sciences There are two neurocognitive hypotheses about auditory hallucinations: the first is that the experience of speaking is only recorded in the brain as a fact in which one is interacting with someone else.

The second theory suggests that there is a poor memory model. In this, traumatic memories could generate intrusive thoughts that are interpreted as coming from another person.

Although this type of hallucinations is usually a symptom of diseases such as schizophrenia, Parkinson's or even Alzheimer's, there are studies that estimate that up to 13.2% of the healthy population suffers.

The phenomenon can occur just when people are going to fall asleep or wake up, and both stress and fatigue are common precipitating factors.

One of the treatments for auditory hallucinations is the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, known as TMS for its acronym in English (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). The low frequency TMS is applied on the left temporoparietal cortex since it has been seen that this area is activated selectively during auditory hallucinations and when the treatment is applied, a decrease in symptoms has been noted.
