Are you afraid of needles? That will not be a problem for you to apply the influenza vaccine, because it will include some modifications, says the doctor Gregory Poland, vaccine expert at Mayo Clinic .

With the new alternatives of the influenza vaccine it is intended to achieve a personalized method as sought by different immunologists.

"I think the fact of having seven different alternatives this year will be confusing for both patients and doctors and nurses, because we have always been accustomed to choosing between the injection or the nasal spray against influenza as the only options available" adds Poland.

Vaccine for everyone!

The director of Mayo Clinic Group for Vaccine Research and the Mayo Clinic Program in Translational Immunovirology and Biodefense , details that the new alternatives of the influenza vaccine for next season include:

1. An injection with four strains of influenza, instead of the traditional three.
2. Nasal sprays with four strains, instead of the normal three.
3. A high dose of the vaccine for the elderly, in order to improve the immune reaction and protection.
4. Two new vaccines without egg protein for those who suffer from allergies to this food.
5. A new vaccine administered to the skin through a mini needle called "microneedle", ideal for those suffering from needle phobia.

"Many alternatives are offered with different types of vaccines to provide care to particular age groups or people with a phobia, such as the needles," explains the doctor.

"Instead of a one-size-fits-all vaccine, this is a real example of the incredible progress in medicine that no longer offers a single alternative for everyone, but provides a suitable option for each person, that is precisely what has happened with the Influenza vaccine".
