Patients with gastric bypass take longer to process alcohol

Patients who have a gastric bypass may take longer in process alcohol , which is a risk when you fall into excesses, indicates a study published by the newspaper Journal of the American College of Surgeons.

The gastric bypass surgery is an operation where the surgeon "staples" much of the stomach, leaving only a small bag attached to the intestine. The surgery helps lose weight in people with obesity .

The study done on 19 people who underwent surgery found that the degree of alcohol in the breath of people who had taken alcoholic beverages was much higher and it took them much longer to return to a state of sobriety, compared to when they had not gone through the operation.

Experts emphasize that although the bariatric surgery has many benefits, it should be analyzed to patients who continue to drink after the operation because many of them can reach the excesses, which lead to recover lost weight, nutritional deficiencies or alcohol dependence.

"Patients must understand that their body will respond differently when they drink alcohol after the surgery and they need to be cautious if they decide to take alcoholic drinks ", He said Dr. John M. Morton , professor of surgery at Stanford University.
