New challenge

Heart disease, such as arrhythmia, is the leading cause of sudden death among high-performance athletes, says the doctor. Hermes Ilarraza, cardiologist at the Cardiac Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine Service of the National Institute of Cardiology "Ignacio Chávez ”.

The cardiologist Hermes Ilarraza explains that 95% of athletes who die during the practice of a high-performance sport are unaware of the presence of heart disease (arrhythmia, hypertension) or have a bad treatment.

The specialist details that high performance athletes expose their body to intensive training to achieve a sporting goal, which can be harmful to their health, by forcing the heart to work more quickly.

That is why it is important that they are aware of the danger to which they are subjected and have the following necessary care to prevent any type of disease, especially cardiovascular ones.

1.- Identify health problems: Most athletes have health problems, whether in the skin, heart, lungs, spine, knees, endocrine or alteration in their menstrual cycle, which can be complicated if they do not receive adequate care.

2.- Carry an adequate treatment: If an athlete has problems with their cardiovascular health, high cholesterol or hypertension, they must follow the recommendations of the specialists to prevent complications that lead to sudden death.

3.- Healthy behaviors: Take a balanced diet with the right proportions of all food groups, avoid harmful habits such as smoking or drinking alcohol excessively.

The cardiologist Hermes Ilarraza details that every year one per 10 thousand high performance athletes dies, so it is important that the culture of prevention be promoted among them and in the general population.
