Mexican species, the most effective!

Is Chayote effective against cancer? Scientists of the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) they assure that this vegetable has anti-tumor properties against cervical, breast and lung cancer.

In the investigation of National Schools of Biological Sciences (ENCB) and of the School of Medicine (ESM) It is detailed that the chayote known as Sechium edule It is the most effective.

Mexican species, the most effective!

The researchers detail that the chayote cultivated in Mexico contains chemical compounds with pharmacological properties that suggest antitumor activity, which are not present in species from China, the United States, Russia, Turkey, Romania, Guatemala and Brazil.

The doctor Rafael Silva Torres, ENCB scientist , explains that "the plants that grow in a country or in a locality do not have the same components as those of other countries, even if it is the same species.

How does it work against cancer?

The researchers detail that the fruit is divided and by special techniques organic compounds and secondary metabolites are obtained.

"In the extracts we analyzed, we found alkaloids, traces of flavonoids and coumarins, xanthones, flavones, triterpenoids, as well as minerals such as magnesium, selenium and zinc, carbohydrates and vitamin B1 and B2," they detail.

After testing the compounds, those with cytotoxic activity are good candidates to investigate antitumor properties and perform spectroscopic tests, which will determine their chemical structures.

Medicine vs cancer

After testing the antitumor effect of the compounds, the researchers plan to take it to the clinical stage with the subsequent interest of producing a drug, as they considered it important to expand the alternatives for the prevention and treatment of cancer.

However, in what emerges this drug, specialists recommend including the chayote in the daily diet at least two or three times a week. And you, how many times a week do you consume chayote?
