The compounds bioactive present in a cup infusion of matte grass can eliminate cells human colon cancer , according to a study in vitro done at the University of Illinois.

In the study in vitro isolated, purified and treated cells of colon cancer with derivatives of caffeoylquinic acid or (CQA) of mate . As the scientists increased the concentration of CQA, the cancer cells died as a result of apoptosis or cell death.

With this research, published in the magazine Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, it was shown that the ability to induce apoptosis is a promising tactic of therapeutic intervention in all types of Cancer .
