Homosexuals prone to cancer

A new study found that gay men are twice as likely to be diagnosed with cancer, showing a risk that should be monitored taking into account the sexual orientation

Homosexual men have a higher risk of becoming infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), while lesbians were found to be more prone to breast cancer, compared to heterosexual women.

The study published in the medical journal Cancer, examined data on sexual orientation and incidence of cancer to more than 122 thousand people during the years 2001, 2003 and 2005.

In the results it was confirmed that around 8% of homosexuals in the group reported having suffered Cancer , almost twice the incidence reported in heterosexuals and bisexuals.

The investigation does not indicate that the homosexual men or lesbian women are more likely to get cancer, but its high incidence could be due to factors associated with their lifestyle. For example, lesbian women are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer, perhaps because many of them decide not to have children.

Experts point to a growing need to develop programs that address the needs of LGBT groups (lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual groups) to prevent the spread of infections and preventable diseases.
