Advantages and disadvantages of hormonal methods

Contraceptive methods that work with synthetic hormones interfere with a woman's menstrual cycle. Some have progestogens and others combine them with progesterone to inhibit the maturation and release of the ovum, since in the absence of ovulation the ovule can not be fertilized and there is no pregnancy.

Some of these methods cause the cervical mucus to be thicker, causing a hostile environment for the sperm and the endometrium to be thin and unsuitable to receive a fertilized egg.
