What is a doula?

If you are pregnant for the first time, perhaps one of the moments that you are most worried about is delivery, since it is something unknown; However, the company of someone expert can reassure you, as is the case with doulas , but what is a doula? In this regard, Artemisa Padilla tells you her experience.

Very at the beginning of my pregnancy One night while we were making some sandwiches, my boyfriend asked me how I planned the delivery. I had no idea. Of course, I thought I knew all the options: the deliveries in water, without anesthesia and the fearsome caesarean sections.

That's it, one of those will be, I thought. And then he asked me if I wanted to bring a doula ... "a what?" I started reading and I thought it was horrible to have a complete stranger accompanying me at the most intimate moment for me and for Martín's father.

A few months later we took the psychoprofilaxis course where I learned what a doula is. There I completely change my idea: the doulas are women who assist the pregnant woman to give birth, they have knowledge of the process of Birth , the body of the woman and the health of the baby.

They know how to massage, control their breathing during contractions and all those aspects that, like mom or new parents, are, believe me, completely foreign, even though we believe otherwise.

We made an appointment with Wadi, la doula, with whom we talked about our doubts and about the role we wanted him to play. On "D-day" he reached us in the hospital for the work of Birth , which was difficult, delayed and without many results (in the end, after many hours I had a cesarean section), however, having her there with me was the best decision. She also accompanied us for Martin's first teat, and it was she who initiated me in the technique of breastfeeding.

In my experience, with a very orthodox and relaxed gynecologist, it was not difficult to talk to him about taking Wadi to the hospital. And of course, the assistance of the doula is that: assistance. Who takes the reins and makes the medical decisions is the doctor in conjunction with the parents, there is no questioning of authority, but a support and a sharing of the process.

So as far as the delivery, my recommendation is to be accompanied by a doula, who can give security, love, support and all the tips that are needed to make the Birth a beautiful, easy and positive experience.
