Transplant of uterus from mother to daughter

Sara Ottoson, 25, was born with a rare disorder that prevented her from developing a uterus; However, now you can become the first woman to receive a uterus transplant from his mother, the same organ where she was born.

Technically it will be a transplant much more complicated than that of a kidney, heart or liver. The operation will be performed by the doctor Mats Brannstrom and his team from the Sahlgrenska Academy of the University of Gothenburg, United Kingdom.

The transplant of the uterus has the same complications as the rest of the transplants, such as the rejection of the new organ by the immune system. But to these are added additional difficulties such as inaccessible location of the uterus and of the long blood vessels that they supply to this organ and that they will have to connect.

This is not the first time that an attempt is made to transplant a complete uterus. In 2000 a 46-year-old woman in Saudi Arabia donated her uterus to a younger patient, but the organ had to be removed three months later, due to complications. In addition, there remains the enormous challenge of demonstrating whether the uterus is functional and capable of maintaining a pregnancy until its end .
