Oropharyngeal cancer related to HPV

Currently there are more than 100 types of human papilloma virus (HPV); most are harmless, but around 30 are associated with an increased risk of Cancer .

According to information from the CNN portal, approximately 70% of all types of oropharyngeal cancer causes them a infection of HPV, and could also contribute to the increase in the number of head cancers Y neck in the United States, according to a new study published in the journalJournal of Clinical Oncology.

These types ofCancer are divided into two categories: those caused by the alcohol Y tobacco ,  and those that originate from the virus of sexual transmission.

The investigation showed that the number of cases of Cancer oropharyngeal in the tonsils , in the back of the mouth, throat and at the base of the language , has increased since the mid-1980s.

The study conducted by the National Cancer Institute of the United States , suggests that one of the reasons is the increase in the number of people who have oral sex and as a result they are exposed to HPV .

When analyzing samples of tissue of nearly 6,000 patients in Hawaii, Iowa and Los Angeles between 1984 and 2004, researchers found thatCancer related to himHPV increased 225%, while cancer that has no relation to theHPV decreased 50%.

Anil Chaturvedi , leader of the study, pointed out that by the year 2020,Cancer oral derivatives ofHPV they will be the most common type related to said viral disease ; besides not being an exclusive problem for women, because men run the same risk of contracting it.
