Levon Helm dies from throat cancer

The drummer and vocalist of the legendary Canadian folk rock group The Band , Levon Helm , died Thursday at age 71 in New York because of a throat cancer , according to his record company.

Helm was diagnosed in 1998 by throat cancer ; however, recently he was informed through his Facebook page that he was in terminal phase , even though he had been previously submitted to a laryngectomy .

The laryngectomy or laryngectomy total is a major surgery to remove part or completely the larynx , as part of the treatment of this type of Cancer which has among its main conditions, the deterioration of the vocal cords .

Since being diagnosed with throat cancer , Levon Helm won three Grammy awards with three consecutive albums. In November 2008, the musical magazine Rolling Stone ranked him 91st on the list of the 100 best singers of all time.

Helm He died at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York where he was accompanied by his family.
