In Mexico, each year about 10 thousand cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed, 70% of them caused by some type of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), an infection that spreads mainly by sexual contact, but whose effects can be contained with a Healthy diet, which includes the consumption of tortilla.

According to data from the Research Institute Biomedical of the National Autonomous University of Mexico , there are more than 100 variations of HPV that affect the mucous membranes of the anogenital tract, produce warts in the area of the cervix and affect both men and women.

Contraction of this virus is, in many cases, the prelude to cervical cancer, a disease that takes the lives of nearly five thousand people each year.

To avoid this outcome "it is imperative that the Papanicolaou test and the hybrid capture test are performed once a year to identify viral DNA, as this is the only way to know if a woman is infected or not. HPV "said Ángel Villa Guerrero, gynecologist at the Ángeles Hospital and an academic at the Faculty of Medicine of La Salle University.

In case the results are positive, a simple way to reduce the spread of this virus and decrease the risks of cervical cancer is through a healthy diet that stimulates the immune system.

"The stimulation can be achieved by consuming antioxidants, vitamin C and folic acid and vegetable fiber, it is also necessary to reduce the consumption of red meat and meat products, avoid stress, exercise at least three times a week and sleep at least eight hours daily".

In this sense, one of the most complete foods, which contain all these nutrients, is the tortilla.

"This traditional and easily accessible food for the Mexican population is an important source of antioxidants, as well as vitamins A, C, D and E, is rich in calcium and fibers, but also contains folic acid, one of the most important elements to prevent infections caused by the Human Papilloma Virus, "he said.
