Ideas for a vow renewal ceremony

Although the statistics show an increase in divorces, the fact is that more and more couples are deciding to renew their marriage vows, but how are the votes renewed?

No matter how you do it, whether through religious ceremonies, civil or original rites, what is involved is that the couple is sure of their love and want to continue celebrating it year after year.

Renewing the vows and reaffirming a commitment is an important and meaningful celebration. Each couple may have different reasons to do so, some repeat the same votes they exchanged at their wedding, for the benefit of friends and family members who were not present in it; others renew their votes to celebrate an important anniversary.

Ideas for a vow renewal ceremony

If you and your partner are considering renewing your vows, discuss the importance of this act. If you want to hold a special ceremony, discuss how you would like to do it. These ideas that we propose can serve as a guide for your planning:

  1. A reaffirmation ceremony: It can be a service in the church, or a field day. They can recreate the original ceremony, including the place, the music, or the readings. They can also create a totally new celebration.
  2. Intimate meeting: The ceremony may include few people, such as old friends or immediate family. Possibly wish to reaffirm their commitment in the presence of friends or in front of their children.
  3. Original votes: Review the original vows and ask yourself: Do these include the promises on which our marriage is currently based? Would our feelings better express new vows? If not, write new ones that reflect your current relationship.
  4. Amenities: Include special music and readings, be they the same ones used at the wedding, or some new ones that have taken on meaning now in your relationship.
  5. Clothing: Some couples use the same wardrobe as the original wedding; others select special dresses. Will it be more meaningful to use the same dresses as the original ceremony, or will dressing other clothes reflect your reality better?
  6. New witnesses: While some couples ask the people who participated in their wedding to do so again at the vow renewal ceremony, there are others that include their children and new friendships. It is very emotional to include the children or ask them to share some thoughts during the ceremony.
  7. Party: Some couples hold a reception after the ceremony. The alternatives include from an informal dinner, a picnic or a party at your favorite restaurant. Ask yourself what kind of celebration you want after the ceremony.

Learn to write your votes

You can use the verses of some poem. Each one can recite a poem that expresses their feelings, or they can choose the same and recite a part each. If they do not like poems, or they find it too corny, they can do the same with the lyrics of a song.

And they are good at it, why do not they sing that song? Whether it's a ballad, a rap, or a rock, it would be original and fun to sing that lyrics that means so much to you. Or if you like movies, dare to use some dialogue of your favorite movie. Of course, if they mention the names of the protagonists, change them for theirs.

Vow renewals do not have to be expensive or too serious. If you plan to send invitations, or print the program of the ceremony, consider including an original photo of the wedding, or a current one that includes your family. This makes the celebration more personal and serves as a reminder. And you, would you be willing to renew the vows with your partner?
