Causes of dry mouth

The hyposialia or dry mouth affects 30% of the population. It is generated by the decrease in the amount of saliva that accumulates in the mouth. The causes that cause this disorder are the consumption of drugs, alcohol and tobacco. The stress , emotional tension, risk situations and fear are factors that can also dry your mouth.

 

Why is saliva so important?

It helps the digestive process, it protects the teeth of the cavities , prevents infections bacteria Y mushrooms , makes it possible to chew and swallow. If you do not have enough saliva, decay develops and you may not get the necessary nutrients from your food because you have a deficiency when you chew.

 

What are the symptoms?

Sticky feeling in the mouth; problems chewing, swallowing, tasting or talking; burning in the mouth, dryness in the throat, dry and cracked lips, dry and rough tongue, sores or mouth sores, infection in the mouth.

 

What can be done?

  • Avoid drinks that contain caffeine , like coffee, tea and some soft drinks.
  • Drink water during meals, this will make it easier to chew and swallow.
  • Chews chewing gum without sugar to stimulate the flow of saliva . Those with citrus, cinnamon or mint flavor are good selections.
  • Avoid the consumption of alcohol and tobacco
