When they are left alone ...

Maternal and infant mortality constitutes a serious public health problem, in accordance with Luís del Río, National Director of World Wide Visión México , because each year there are more than a thousand maternal deaths and around 15 thousand children, related to pregnancy, childbirth or puerperium (quarantine).

In particular, high rates of maternal and infant mortality are recorded in states such as Guerrero, Chiapas, Oaxaca, State of Mexico, Veracruz and Chihuahua, so it is essential to reconsider comprehensive assistance programs for the health care of mothers and children , as well as a boost of initiatives such as the campaign "Children's Health First" , which pursues that end.

According to data from the UNICEF , the teenagers they have three times more risk of complications of pregnancy, childbirth or puerperium; In addition, it is estimated that more than 300 thousand women in this age group get pregnant each year, which makes universal health coverage indispensable with the intention of preventing maternal mortality, among other problems.

Although Mexico ranks 76th in maternal mortality worldwide, it is still far from complying with the agreements and expectations of reducing such rates as established in the Mileno Declaration. However, there has been a reduction of around 12% since 2012, reveals the doctor Ignacio Villaseñor Ruíz, from the National Center for Health for Children and Adolescents, of the National Health System.

In this sense, he explains that currently the Federal Government has worked on health policies that allow the projection of a new development plan that achieves such coverage, emphasizing the minimum life indicators essential, in order to ensure survival and better quality of life of both the mother and the infants.

According to the specialist, among the indicators, certain priorities can be established to work, such as the reduction of maternal mortality, the regulation and coverage of deliveries attended by qualified health personnel, as well as universal access to dignified and safe reproduction, through comprehensive and quality health services.

Therefore, the doctor María Graciela Freyermuth Enciso, of the Observatory of Maternal Mortality in Mexico , indicates that in our country it will be essential to pay special attention to those teenagers who are mothers at an early age and whose children are under five years of age, since they are the most vulnerable group in maternal and infant mortality.
