Urgent a Committee of pharmacology in Mexico

After the investigation that the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has made around the regulation of ingredients used in the manufacture of cosmetics, deodorants and personal beauty items, health experts say that Mexico must have a Committee to regulate the use of certain substances.

In an interview with the dermatologist Rufina Villanueva, she points out that it is important for Mexico to have an organism that regulates the use of substances that, according to some research in the United States, can put at risk the health of millions of people:

"We know that some heavy metals are used in the production of these products. Several years ago the use of the mercury and various colorants for putting the health of the dermis , but even then there is no total regulation in our country. "

Therefore, says the expert, it is required that all products for personal use and beauty have the label with all the ingredients they contain, since sometimes only some are mentioned, so the user does not know with certainty what it is that is using.

Allergic dermatitis

Among the dangers that run to use harmful substances for the skin is the development of a contact dermatitis. This type of allergy is characterized by redness on the face, skin rashes, itching, and occasionally, an inflammation in the skin .

According to Villanueva, the diagnosis of contact dermatitis is based on the realization of a good clinical history complemented with the so-called Patch tests .

These, also known as Patch testing have been used for more than 70 years and consist of the application on the upper back of suspicious substances for 48 hours in a row, to observe the reaction of the skin.

Possible solutions

Once the test is done, a first reading should be made at 48 hours and a second at 72 or 96 hours, although sometimes it may be even later depending on the suspicious substances. The epicutaneous tests are not affected by the taking of antihistamines .

In this sense, Villanueva recommends reviewing the ingredients of all products for personal use well and points out that if an atypical reaction is identified by the application of a certain product, it is no longer used:

"The reason is simple. This can affect your skin too much and develop a bigger problem like an outbreak of infection. Usually this allergy occurs at the first contact with a external and harmful agent for the body, but it can also develop months or years after using a product. "

The most commonly used treatment to counteract contact dermatitis are antiviral creams and the use of anti-inflammatory . The recommendation is to use chemical-free products and detect any reaction in time to come with a dermatologist and avoid self-medication .
