Know the eye problems of diabetes!

Diabetes is a disease that causes damage to the body when proper treatment is not taken; some of them are eye problems. According to the Mexican Diabetes Federation (FMD) Five out of every 100 patients live with blindness.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) from the United States, ensures that eye problems related to diabetes are presented gradually, as a result of excess blood glucose.

 

Know the eye problems of diabetes!

High levels of glucose and blood pressure directly impact four parts of the eye: retina, vitreous, crystalline and optic nerve, which generates diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, glaucoma and blindness.

To keep your eyes healthy and prevent the damage caused by diabetes, the NIDDK recommends you:

  1. Control your blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol levels
  2. Get an eye exam annually
  3. Avoid smoking
  4. Eat a balanced diet, recommended by your doctor
  5. Practice a physical activity for 30 minutes a day
  6. Take your medications on time

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, for its acronym in English) recommend visiting your doctor if you have trouble reading, you can not see clearly; halo notes around the lights, dark spots or flashes of light, pain in the eyes, because they are symptoms that you have eye problems.
