IMSS invests in research

The Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) increased the budget for research protocols , going from 300 thousand pesos to 3.5 million suffering, to improve methods of prevention and diagnosis of chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, kidney failure, cancer, cardiovascular and mental disorders.

Fabio Salamanca Gómez , head of the Health Research Coordination of the IMSS, pointed out, to the newspaper Milenio, that in 2010 the 400 Social Security researchers created around 900 scientific articles , of which 69.5% appeared in journals, included in international indexes, and almost 60% with an impact factor.

"This is to contribute with new knowledge, with more tools of diagnosis, of prevention and in the therapeutic approach of the most frequent pathology that affects the rightholders, which translates into support for research on priority health issues."

Salamanca Gómez stressed that the Health Research Coordination of the IMSS also cares about the formation of high-level human resources, teachers and doctors in the field of medicine and the biomedicine . Therefore, 80 postgraduate students graduated, 59 in master's programs and 21 doctorate.

He added that the Department of Medical Benefits of the institute has supported the publication of the journal Archives of Medical Research, founded several years ago and now published by a prestigious international publishing house.
