World Sexual Health Day celebrated in 27 countries

Mexico City, (Guadalupe Cruz Jaimes / CIMAC) .- This September 4, for the first time in Mexico and in 27 countries around the world, the World Sexual Health Day, with the purpose of promoting it and achieving the recognition of sexual rights as inherent to people in order to demand compliance.

With the motto Let's talk about that ... let's talk about sexual health , communities and organizations from 27 countries on five continents, will promote spaces for discussion and recognition of sexual health as an integral part of the right to health , reported Esther Corona, representative in Mexico of the World Health Association (WAS).

In an interview, Esther Corona, representative in Mexico of the WAS, pointed out that this type of action is necessary because in the national scenario, the violation of sexual rights is a constant, as a result of this the criminalization of abortion in 17 of 32 states of the country and the "high prevalence" of teen pregnancy , consequence of misinformation and unmet demand for contraceptives.

Young people at risk

The use of contraceptives has decreased among women aged 15 to 24 years. In 2006, 56% of them used some method of contraception, a proportion 5% lower than in 1997, according to the National Survey of Demographic Dynamics (Enadid).

While the single young women who have sexual activity, they use even less contraceptives than those of the same age group, according to the 2006 Enadid, only 35% of them used some form of contraception.

The unmet needs of contraception among married women 15 to 24 years old, "they are high and they are increasing", since four years ago it was 31% and in 1997 it was 23%, says the study Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Needs in Mexico: Challenges and Opportunities, prepared by the Institute Guttmacher.

According to this analysis, among Mexican women aged 15 to 19 years, it is expected that about 835 thousand have had a child at 18 years of age or younger.

Despite the interest of having smaller families, from 1997 to 2006 the proportion of women in the 20 to 24 year old age range who had a son before reaching the age of majority.

The lack of contraceptives in addition to being linked to unwanted pregnancies, is that this population is the most affected by sexually transmitted infections (ITS).

In the world, young people between 15 and 24 years of age represent 45% of the new infections of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV / AIDS). While in Mexico, 29.7% of people living with AIDS are between 15 and 29 years old, according to data from the National Center for the Control and Prevention of AIDS. HIV AIDS (Censed)

According to Esther Corona, the promotion of sexual rights is not a priority for the Mexican government, "this, unfortunately, is a global problem, not only the country, it is because sexual rights are not yet recognized as rights humans".

The proof is that in the country, sexual rights have not been promoted in mass campaigns for more than five years. The last one was made five years ago, it was the booklet of the sexual rights of youth, mentioned the representative in the country of the WAS.

In this panorama, it is crucial that concerted actions are carried out between the government and civil society , as well as a campaign that provides information about the right to sexual freedom , sexual autonomy, integrity and security, the right to sexual privacy and the right to reproductive, free and responsible decisions.

There lies the importance of the slogan of the first World Sexual Health Day , is a first step to start the dialogue between the organized society, authorities and the population in general, with the purpose that the exercise of these rights is understood as part of sexual health.
