What happens in Mexico

In 2012, the World Health Organization approved together with other international organizations the Global Vaccination Plan, with which it aims to guarantee by 2020 equitable and universal access to all available vaccines.

According to the Mexican doctor Raúl Romero Cabello, who is part of this global project, we must decide not only who, but with what vaccines we have to support the more than 7 billion inhabitants of the planet.

He also researcher of the Faculty of Medicine of the UNAM It states that the Global Plan intends that 25 basic vaccines for the entire population will be fully available within 10 years.

In Mexico, most of the vaccines recommended by that plan are available. These include the Human Papilloma, in the varieties that produce cervical cancer.

The 5 most anticipated vaccines and their usefulness in Mexico

1. Acute infantile diarrhea caused by the enterotoxigenic E. coli bacterium could stop causing havoc among the pediatric population thanks to an intranasal peptide vaccine created by a group of scientists led by the Dr. Yolanda López Vidal , of the Program Microbial Molecular Immunology , of the Faculty of Medicine of the UNAM.

2. Mexico seeks to use a triple viral aerosol vaccine. However, according toJosé Luis Díaz Ortega, responsible for the project, the immunity of the inhaled vaccine is greater to prevent measles, as effective for rubella, but almost null against mumps.

The method of aerosol prevention is more economical than subcutaneous injection: there is savings in individual and disposable syringes; payment is avoided to eliminate sharp and potentially infectious waste and does not require specialized personnel.

3. There is already a "vaccine against drugs such as cocaine and heroin" in Mexico. According to Raúl Romero Cabello, although we already have this type of vaccine, these do not work with antigens, but block the brain circuits associated with the pleasure they produce. In 2012, the Health Secretary He announced that he had a patent of the second type, but that it will be ready for 5 years.

4. The vaccine against dengue is already tested in humans. At the moment it is in phase of investigation number three, that is to say, that the laboratory that realizes it began with tests of the biological one in the man, but still it is way to cross. Attempts have been made in the last 30 years to manufacture a vaccine that protects against the four dengue subtypes; the most advanced is the one done in the company Sanofi Pasteur , although there is still a lot of evidence left before it can go on the market.

5. Another vaccine already available in Mexico is the seasonal H1N1 influenza, from which Mexico acquired 22.4 million doses and which began to be applied since October 2011 in the public sector (the private sector also buys this formula at pharmaceutical companies).

According to Romero Cabello, other vaccines, such as anthrax or equine encephalitis, which are included in the WHO recommendation, are not considered a priority in our country. The vaccines they are part of a future in disease prevention.
