Deadly rhythm

Patients with atrial fibrillation do not die from this disease; however, they suffer devastating consequences: cerebral infarcts, which may not kill him, but leave him in absolute or partial disability. What generates an emotional and economic cost for the family, says the expert José Luis Robledo.

Deadly rhythm

It is estimated that in Mexico there are a million people with atrial fibrillation, but only 14% are diagnosed, the rest day by day their lives are in danger, says Robles.

This disease occurs when electrical signals are sent abnormally, causing the atria to vibrate or "fibrile". This causes the heart to beat too fast or slow with an irregular rhythm (arrhythmic), so blood can accumulate in the atria and form a clot capable of traveling to the brain and produce a cerebrovascular event (EVC).

Some of the symptoms that it presents are:

1. Palpitations

2. Dizziness

3. Chest pain

4. Difficulty breathing

Other ways to diagnose this disease is through a simple electrocardiogram (ECG) or a Holter (measures the frequency continuously for 24 to 48 hrs). This is a simple, non-painful test and through which the electrical activity of the heart is recorded, which allows an assessment of the heart rate. Another option is an echocardiogram, with which images of the heart in motion are obtained and allows to evaluate its shape, functioning and the condition of its valves.

Remember that your health is in your hands. Do not forget! Do not leave for tomorrow what you can do today.
