Lung cancer will exceed in 2015 the breast

The World Health Organization He says that every 30 seconds, somewhere in the world, a person with breast cancer is diagnosed. Only in Mexico, it ranks number one among the causes of death in the country's female sector; However, this situation could change in the coming years.

According to a study published by the specialized magazine Annals of Oncology , lung cancer mortality rates have grown among women in all countries, while breast cancer has declined.

In the research, it is estimated that in 2013, 14, 6 females will die for every 100 of breast cancer and 14 for every 100 of lung cancer. This last cancer has experienced an increase of 7% among women since 2009.

Experts say that if the trend remains the same, in 2015 lung cancer will become the leading cause of death from carcinoma in Europe; although this is already a reality in countries like the United Kingdom and Poland.

Carlo La Vecchia, one of the authors of the study and director of the department of Epidemiology of the Mario Negri Institute , suggests that this phenomenon is a consequence of the increase of women who smoke.

In the case of the decrease in breast cancer, the expert suggests that it is because there is, more and more, a culture of prevention, which makes it possible to detect it in its early stages and make the treatments more effective.
