Oxytocin, a bond of love between mother and child

During pregnancy the hormone called oxytocin, which circulates in a woman's bodypregnant is the key to establish the strength of emotional tie and of behavior that will unite the mother with her son.

The team led by Dr. Ruth Feldman, from Bar-Ilan University in Israel, is the first to demonstrate that oxytocin, called "the hormone of love and attachment," influences the bond between mothers and their babies.

The team measured oxytocin levels in 62 women during the 1st and 2nd trimesters of pregnancy and the first month after delivery. Patients with high levels of the hormone had a more personalized relationship, which generated a more exclusive bond with their babies, they also showed more concern about the control of the child, the safety of separation and the future of the child.

The importance of a good bond between mother and child from the first days of life will reinforce a correct psychic, physical and emotional development. Devoting time to child care will generate an interaction of trust and security.
