Omega 6 vs cholesterol and triglycerides

The omega 6 unsaturated fatty acids are a series of polyunsaturated fats that are only obtained from food and whose properties have many benefits, such as reducing the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides .

According to cardiologist Emilio Then, President of the working group of Dislipemias of the Spanish Society of Cardiology , a good balance in the supply of essential fatty acids and the significant contribution of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats delays the appearance of arteriosclerosis lesions.

Among the various capacities of these unsaturated fatty acids is to correct the profile of cholesterol , favoring more good cholesterol (HDL) . It also promotes that the particles of LDL be less harmful.

In this sense, according to the specialist, it has been observed that diets rich in omega 6, especially longer chain, reduce the amount of triglycerides in blood. The intake of unsaturated fatty acids appears to delay or correct the onset of adult-onset diabetes, which in turn reduces the risk of cardiovascular risk .

Among the various unsaturated fatty acids that make up the omega and that have a beneficial effect to cleanse the blood of cholesterol and triglycerides , they find each other:

1. Linoleic acid. Alpha-linolenic acid can be obtained from cooking oils such as canola, soybeans or flaxseed oil, while gamma-linolenic acid can be obtained from borage, evening primrose and black currant seed oils.

2. Arachidonic acid. Due to the use of corn products and corn oil in the feed of cattle and pigs, the high diets in these meats are rich in this acid.

Other sources rich in omega 6 unsaturated fatty acids are nuts, cereals, most vegetable oils, poultry meats, eggs, wholemeal bread and avocado, according to foodinsight.org

It is very important that these unsaturated fatty acids are always accompanied by other foods with vitamin E, to prevent their oxidation and also to improve their effectiveness (it is a cofactor).

It is recommended that if moderate intake (ratio 4 to 1 against omega 3), otherwise it can generate some complications and conditions such as depression.
