Lung cancer 90% from smoking

In Mexico, as in the rest of the world, the lung cancer It is the main cause of death and in our country it is one of the most aggressive. However, it can be a preventable disease, since 90% of cases are due to smoking .

In this regard, the doctor Jesús Felipe González Roldán , specialist in Public Health and Vice President of the Mexico Non-Tobacco Network , states: "The risk of developing lung cancer It is closely related to the number of cigarettes smoked and the age of onset of consumption. A single cigarette a day increases the danger of developing a malignant tumor and for those people who smoke 20 or more cigarettes a day (2 or more packs), this exposure can be lethal. "

The consumption of tobacco is one of the main causes of lung cancer , larynx, oral cavity, pharynx and esophagus and contributes to the development of cancer in the cervix and breast, among others. González Roldán indicated that more than 4 thousand individual compounds have been identified in the tobacco and in the smoke of it, which at least 50 are carcinogenic , such as arsenic, benzene, cadmium, nickel, polonium, chromium and beryllium, among others:

"Not only the active smoker is the one who is at risk of contracting lung cancer and other types related to smoke tobacco . Numerous epidemiological studies reveal the harmful effects that environmental smoke from tobacco for the health of the non-smoking population, "says the health expert of the Mexico Network Without Tobacco .

The doctor González Roldán recommended: "People who have already been diagnosed with Cancer have much greater reasons to leave the tobacco . For those undergoing surgery or chemotherapy, quitting smoking helps improve the body's ability to heal and respond to therapy. The risk of pneumonia and respiratory failure is reduced. Leaving the cigar can reduce the risk of the return of Cancer or that a second type of this one forms ".
