ACV risk factors

Could the anxiety increase the risk of cerebrovascular accident (CVA) ? That's what a new long-term study of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine : the greater the anxiety, the greater the risk of stroke.

The study participants who suffered from the greatest anxiety they had a risk of ACV 33% higher compared to those with the lowest levels of anxiety, the researchers found.

ACV risk factors

The research, published in the Stroke magazine , points out that anxiety can be related to smoking and a higher pulse and blood pressure, which are known risk factors of ACV .

In this sense, the Dr. Aviva Lubin, Associate Director of ACV at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City , who did not participate in the study, says that treating risk factors as smoke , hypertension and diabetes is the key to preventing ACV . "I doubt that treating anxiety itself reduces risk," he said.

In the study, led by Maya Lambiase, researcher of behavioral cardiovascular medicine in the Department of Psychiatry of the Faculty , they found that even after taking into account other factors, even modest increases in anxiety they were associated with a greater chance of suffering a ACV .

"We all have something of anxiety from time to time, but when it is elevated and / or chronic, it can have an effect on the blood vessel system years later, "Lambiase said in a press release from the American Heart Association (American Heart Association) .

It is not clear if the anxiety itself increases the risk of ACV , or if the increase is due to the behaviors of those people. For example, people with high levels of anxiety are more likely to smoke and to be physically inactive, the researchers noted.

In addition, higher levels of the hormone stress , heart rate or blood pressure could also be factors, said Lambiase.
