Technological temptation

When an 11-year-old boy in San Diego got an annoyance cutaneous allergy , the doctors determined that their origin was on the family's iPad. They also found a quick and easy solution: cover the metal surfaces of the iPad with a tight cover.

The incident highlights the importance of taking into account that "electronic devices and personal effects of electronic appearance are potential sources of exposure to nickel" and can produce allergy to this element, they affirm the Dr. Sharon Jacob and Dr. Shehla Admani , dermatologists of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).

Technological temptation

According to the experts skin rashes known as dermatitis allergic of contact "are becoming increasingly prevalent" among young children, and exposures to nickel are one of the main culprits.

Common sources of exposure to nickel Children include clothing closures, earrings, and teeth containing nickel. However, laptops , cell phones, video game controls and even rope toys have nickel.

Alternative practice

The solution: cover the iPad with a case "Smart Case" designed to cover the back of the device, which contains a lot of nickel. Doctors noted that parents do not even have to buy a Smart Case: covering the metal back of the iPad with tape also works.

After placing the iPad protective case, the child's condition "improved significantly," the doctors said. They advise parents who are concerned about the possibility of a nickel allergy looking for products with nickel-free casings.
