Climate change increases diseases

Among the main issues on the agendas of most countries in the world, is the climate change . This has become a matter of concern, not only for the activist groups concerned about the planet, but for the Heads of State ; as proof, the summit that will be held in Cancun, Mexico from November 29 to December 10, 2010 , where the presidents of several countries will meet to look for alternatives to this problem.

The Mexican Secretary of Health, José Ángel Cordoba Villalobos , recognizes that there is still no global commitment against climate change, so it represents a epidemiological risk for the population, not only of Mexico, but of the world.

Cordoba Villalobos explained that "there re-emerging diseases As the malaria , the yellow fever that actually in some countries already it was eradicated , and cases of the West Nile virus, which is beginning to appear and the increase in cases of dengue , when in fact a decrease had already been seen ".

Within the framework of COP16 , a meeting will be held with several heads of state, with the purpose of discussing about the repercussions that the climate change in the world, such as the melting of the glacial regions that directly influences the rise in sea levels, causing floods, which are accompanied by diseases own of these phenomena.

At this meeting, we intend to make a risk atlas to locate the areas with the highest incidence and the type of diseases per region. The analysis on what concerns Mexico and climate change are in charge of doing so: the National Institute of Public Health and the Undersecretariat of Promotion and Prevention of Health. Based on the results emanating from this research, said atlas will be complemented.
