With the aim of ensuring that patients with leukemia , renal insufficiency , chronic diseases or surgically treated, count on blood when required, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) makes a call to continue and promote the culture of blood donation . In this regard, the medical Bárbara Novello Garza , Head of the Integral Service of Blood Banks, of the IMSS Medical Infrastructure Planning Coordination , affirmed that from January to May of 2011, 370 thousand donations have been received, which means 6% more than the previous year.

Novello Garza, said that annually, the IMSS receives an average of 700 thousand blood donations, 5% on a voluntary basis, that is, 15 thousand donors: "In addition, the institute has 10 central blood banks in Medical Units of High Specialty (UMAE), 57 blood banks in General Hospitals of Area or Regional, as well as 104 positions of bleeding, places where the donors are served and that sends the blood to the banks for their study, to satisfy the demand ".

The head of the Integrated Blood Bank Service Area of ​​the IMSS, noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends promoting the altruistic donation of blood, because this is a very important action that saves lives, that is why on Tuesday, June 14, the multinational organism decreed it as the World Blood Donor Day .
