WHO says cell phones increase cancer risk

The rhythm of life Current requires us to maintain a constant communication, either with our family and friends, or with the members of our respective work teams, clients, etc. For this purpose, cellphones have become a tool that, far from being a luxury, they have become a need , this despite the supposed damage to health that its use entails.

The excessive use of cell phones has been at the center of the controversy for several years, but has become more emphatic in recent days, due to its alleged incidence in the development of brain cancer. Even though I still there is no evidence concrete and definitive, the World Health Organization (WHO), has spoken in favor of this theory, through the International Agency for Cancer Research (IARC , in English); which said in a statement that the electromagnetic fields generated by the radiofrequencies of telephones are "possibly carcinogenic" for humans since it has a major impact on the specific emergence of glicomas , a type of malignant brain tumor.

To issue this information, the agency relied on a study that detected, up to 2004, a 40% increase in the risk of glicoma between intensive users: those who use their cell phone for more than 30 minutes a day. However, in the statement of the WHO it is ensured that although there is "positive association", other factors can not be excluded and it can not be clearly established what causes cancer in humans.

Christopher Wild , director of the IARC , said it will be necessary to carry out an "additional investigation" in the long term, taking into account the possible consequences that an affirmation like this could have on public health (the WHO esteem that there are 5,000 million of cell phones in the world). So he recommended that until such time as such information is available. Pragmatic measures should be taken to reduce exposure, such as the use of free hands or send text messages .

The problem lies not so much in the use of these devices, but in the frequency and duration of it. If something is abused, it will most likely be affecting the Health of those who incur such abuse. In any case, it is not necessary to set aside the observations and alternative recommendations of the WHO to reduce risks .
