Where did the legend come from?

There is Pablito next to the pool jumping next to his mother saying-how much do I need to go back to swimming? -. As for most of us, his mother told him that he had to wait at least two hours after eating to get into the water, because if he could not give him a cramp. But why do you have to wait for time to go swimming after eating?

The answer is: for a simple legend. Nobody knows for sure where the idea came up that swimming after eating could cause a cramp or cause the interruption in digestion; even studies carried out by the National Center for Biotechnology Information they point out that sports such as running can cause twice as much stomach upset as swimming.

Where did the legend come from?

If there is any reason not to go swimming, it is not exactly having eaten before, we could lose our sense practicing this sport without having to eat food beforehand. The fading or pain that can occur during swimming and is known as "Digestion cut" It is really a hydrocution.

The hydrocution is a thermodifferential shock caused by a sudden change in the body temperature to have contact with cold water, which generates an inhibition in breathing and blood circulation. Something that can produce a cardiorespiratory arrest or simply a faint in the water and possible drowning as a result.

This condition, as you can see, is not related to the digestion process, says a study carried out by theUniversity of Murcia, who recommend to avoid this shock always enter the water in a gradual way.

We could say that the only reason for Pablito to wait for a while before returning to the pool, is because he spent too many hours exposed to the sun and that the water in the pool is less than 27 degrees, or that he has eaten considerably and must perform vigorous training; too much food will cause discomfort and diminish your sporting ability.

Anyway, although now we know the truth, we will always remember the emotion we felt when our mothers authorized us to return to the water.
