What is the normal level of triglycerides?

Triglycerides are fats that fulfill a physiological and vital function within the organism; However, when the normal level of triglycerides changes and rises, it can also be detrimental to health.

The body itself produces these types of fats, but in addition, they are obtained from food. The calories we consume are converted into triglycerides and stored in the adipocytes for later use.

However, if you consume more calories than your body needs, the level of triglycerides can be high and trigger obesity, as explained by the neurologist. Mauricio Díaz, researcher at the Institute of Neurobiology UNAM Juriquilla:

A high level can lead to other conditions such as heart disease, atherosclerosis, stroke, causing inflammation of the pancreas and diabetes. Therefore, it is recommended to pay special attention to their monitoring and to know their own normal levels of triglycerides.

The ranges of normal triglyceride levels can be obtained through a laboratory test, where the LDL cholesterol level is calculated, among other factors. According to the INational Institutes of Health of the United States , can be considered:

1. Normal: less than 150 mg / dL
2. High limit: 150 to 199 mg / dL
3. High: 200 to 499 mg / dL
4. Very high: 500 mg / dL or higher

However, theAmerican Heart Association It issues some recommendations regarding these values due to the variations that may exist in the different tests, so it is determined that:

If the triglycerides were measured while the person was fasting from 8 to 12 hours, an optimal level would be less than 100mg / dl. A normal level would be 100mg / dl up to 150mg / dl. Any measurement above that, could be considered from high to very high.

On the other hand, if the triglycerides were measured in a state without fasting, a normal level would be under 200mg / dl. Above that would be considered high triglycerides.

Knowing these reference values can be decisive when establishing whether a person is at risk of suffering from various diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases. An adequate lifestyle is the best way to prevent variations in these levels.
