What is hypercalcemia?

Calcium is one of the most abundant minerals in the body of people and is an important part of the skeleton. Its consumption is essential, but it should not be abused, since the excess develops hypercalcemia , a condition related to heart disease.

According to a new study of the Uppsala University and the Karolinska Institute, in Sweden, Women who ingest large amounts of calcium may have an increased risk of heart disease.

The Swedish researchers analyzed the lifestyle of 61 thousand 433 women, that is, reviewed their history of physical activity, education, their consumption of tobacco and alcohol, as well as other dietary factors (feeding and intake of calcium supplements)

Women who consumed more than 1,400 milligrams a day had twice the risk of death from heart disease, compared to those who had an intake between 600 and 1,000 milligrams.

That is, the risk of dying from a cardiovascular disease increases to 49% and 40% for another reason, the study published in the portal of BMJ.

The authors reveal that excess calcium increases the levels of a protein associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

The doctor Karl Michaëlsson, professor and orthopedic surgeon at the University of Uppsala in Sweden, ensures that with a normal and balanced diet is not necessary to take calcium supplements. These "are useful if you have a very low consumption of this mineral".

What is hypercalcemia?

The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM) notes that calcium is not only useful for bones, it is also necessary for the contraction of muscles, the functioning of the nervous system, regulate heart rate and blood pressure.

For this reason, when a hypercalcemia or excess calcium in the blood generates health problems such as osteoporosis, kidney stones, abnormal heart rhythm, mental confusion or induce a coma.

It can be detected through a blood test and parathyroid hormone, which is recommended after suffering from muscle weakness, fatigue, constipation, nausea and confusion.
