What are these movements?

Winks or involuntary grimaces? In accordance with Rodolfo Solís, academic of the School of Psychology of the UNAM, nervous tics affect men more than women; and that are usually inherited from parents to children.

However, the appearance of nervous tics is, at times, a manifestation of some social phobia, anxiety or stress, as indicated by the Spanish Society for the Study of Anxiety and Stress (SEAS) . Here women are more vulnerable, since a study published by the magazine Molecular Psychiatry It indicates that their brain is more sensitive to the action of a hormone that orchestrates the body's response to stress.

What are these movements?

The expert Rodolfo Solis points out that a nervous tic is a stereotyped movement, sudden or sudden, unpredictable and repetitive, involving skeletal muscle groups; It has to do mainly with the face, neck or shoulders. It could also be divided into the following:

1. Motor tics. They usually start at the preschool age. They appear anywhere on the body and last a few weeks and then disappear. These are subdivided into simple, sudden and brief movements like grimaces, and complex actions with a longer duration that seem to have a purpose such as grooming the hair.

2. Vocal tics Here you can find the moans, throat clearing, coughing or snorting, and sometimes words or phrases.

3. Transient tics. Vocals or engines: relatively common.

4. Chronic tics They last more than a year and do not disappear completely; its intensity is variable.

5. Gilles de la Tourette syndrome. It is the most severe form of tics that combines both the motors and the vowels. In this the tics can occur many times during the day, but tend to improve or worsen at different times, and also change over time.

Most nerves tics occur in childhood and over the years are fading; however, the best option is to go with a specialist to assess the severity and origin of these.
