Use of hearing aids causes hearing damage

Hearing aids have become a part of daily life, however, listening to music with too loud a volume increases the risk of hearing loss and even reaching the deafness .

In Mexico between 20 and 30% of adults suffer from a decrease in auditory sense , according to figures from Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS ), some of these cases correspond to problems not detected since childhood, others due to the natural wear and tear of this sense and in the population that is between 16 and 40 years old it is due to the constant use of cell phones and hearing aids.

The doctor Adelaido López Chavira , Otolaryngologist at the Hospital Satellite Corporation , recommends that the ideal is that when we listen to music we do it at a moderate volume, that is, at a level that allows us to hear what is happening around us and at the same time, not have to shout to be heard.

The first signs of hearing loss are as follows.

• If you have difficulty understanding what people are talking about. • You must constantly adjust the volume of the television. • When someone talks to you, you constantly have to ask them to say what they have told you. • You are uncomfortable listening to high-pitched sounds.

Noises that are considered harmful are from 85 decibels , which is for example the noise of traffic or the hum of a refrigerator, the engine of motorcycles and tractors for mowing the lawn reach 90, the MP3 music players can reach 100 decibels, a 110-120 concert.

In case we present some principle of loss of hearing what we should do is to first resort to otolaryngologist or to audiologist to make a audiometry that allows us to know how much we listen and the quality with what we do.

It is not about pointing out the responsibility of the music players, but to take responsibility for the care of our Health in order to avoid acquiring a hearing disability that can significantly reduce the quality of life.
