UNAM offers therapy against post-traumatic stress

When a person is a victim of a violent act such as kidnapping, homicide, extortion, assault or disappearances, he suffers different consequences ranging from generalized anxiety, adaptive disorders, pathological grief to acute stress and post-traumatic stress disorder .

In order to provide support to this type of victims, the Virtual Teaching and Cyberpsychology Laboratory of the Faculty of Psychology of the UNAM , directed by Dr. Georgina Cárdenas López, created the e-Health distance care system.

Through this program, which is sponsored by the Fundación Gonzalo Río Arronte, psychological interventions are offered online as virtual counseling, online psychotherapy and group psychotherapy with virtual reality.

The program was created for children, young people and adults, regardless of the distances or social conditions, because everyone is exposed to suffer directly or as witnesses, a violent situation.

further e-Health offers psychological support to witnesses or relatives of the victim who tend to present learned hopelessness, erroneous models in problem solving, social anxiety and depression.

Dr. Cárdenas explained that some strategies that are used for children between 5 and 11 years old are the use of educational video games and digital prevention animations.

For young people between 12 and 18 years of age, in addition to video games, early intervention animations are used to train them in coping strategies and directed social behavior.
