UNAM investigates causes of death of cradle

The death of cradle it is the death of the newborn, mainly when he is sleeping; still can not be explained clinically by the autopsy nor for the analysis where it occurs, researchers from the Institute of Neurobiology (INb) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM)

Experts clarify that the incidence of these cases occurs between the first and sixth months of life and is recorded mostly in sex male .

According to several studies, the factors that trigger this death sudden lactating are the hyperthermia (increase in temperature ), birth premature, exposure to smoke from tobacco and the opiates .

However, the main risk factor for this syndrome is the position of the child when sleeping, due to the inability of the baby to react to the hypoxia , he pointed José Fernando Peña Ortega , researcher of Department of Neurobiology of Development and Neurophysiology .

The expert recommended that an effective measure to combat this problem is to accommodate the baby on his back at bedtime.

What is hypoxia?

It's the lack of oxygen . This induces a blue discoloration of the skin or cyanosis. Between the symptom Most common are:

  1. Headache
  2. Fatigue
  3. Sickness
  4. Instability

The scientists of the UNAM have identified a group of neurons specials called pacemaker , which can be resistant to hypoxia and responsible for generating, by themselves, the locks . In addition, the activity of these cells It depends on certain substances of the brain known as neuromodulators , as the serotonin .

In laboratory tests with rodents it was discovered that females have a greater ability to resist hypoxia than males, with a similarity seen in humans.
