Types of urinary incontinence

Urinary incontinence is not a disease in itself, but is a manifestation secondary to infections or certain structural damage to the bladder, and in the female population its frequency is higher among those over 35 years.

José Roberto Risco Cortés, academic of the Faculty of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), explains that the fact that women do not mention the symptoms to their doctor hinders timely attention.

The importance is such that if the patient does not mention it, the doctor should do it. "My recommendation would be that at the time of making the clinical history, specialists asked the direct question: 'Madam, do you have or have you had involuntary loss of urine?', Which would be of great help to carry out the necessary studies and determine the diagnosis".

Types of urinary incontinence

Urinary incontinence has been classified into different types according to their causes, which include:

  1. Genuine effort: It occurs in a woman when she has had several births or is in postmenopause, since in that stage of life, women can experience physiological changes that affect the urethral sphincter, which allows the urine to escape before efforts like coughing, sneeze, laugh, get up, sit or carry something.
  2. Emergency urinary: It usually occurs when there is an infectious process and manifests itself with the continuous sensation of going to the bathroom.

  3. Mixed urinary: Combination of the two previous types.

Treatment options

The expert indicates that any involuntary loss of urine deserves to go immediately to the doctor, to determine what type of incontinence is and in that way, give the proper handling. "There are cases in which a treatment based on antibiotics solves the problem very well, there will also be others in which surgery will be needed, but these are situations that only the specialist can evaluate, document and treat."

In addition, he adds that involuntary urinary losses cause a disorder not only physical, but also psychological, work and social so it is very important to be treated in a timely manner.

"There comes a time when they no longer want to leave the house, because they fear that any situation will arise. At this point, women may become depressed and not strive to overcome their condition.

A frequent practice is that they resort to the use of diapers or sanitary napkins to partially 'solve' their problem, which represents a great risk, because urine is an excellent means of growing infections, "says José Roberto Risco Cortés.

It is necessary to avoid that the shame of sharing certain symptoms to the doctor avoids receiving attention, otherwise it is exposed to the complications derived from this situation to appear and to increase with them the discomforts. "The principle of patience is to start with oneself." If you want to know more information write to: bojorge@teleton.org.mx
