The role of men in pregnancy in the Mayan culture

Men are faithful companions, from the news of the pregnancy have the slogan that the woman and the product reach happy finished. So they strive to feed their partner , take care of her, avoid disappointment and help her. They also reduce their own alcohol intake so as not to cause conflicts and dislikes.

The role of man in pregnancy has been much questioned, but there are ancestral cultures that do not give rise to questions. At least that is what a study conducted in couples that follows the teachings of the Mayan culture shows.

For this sector of the Mexican population, premature birth and abortion are related to "susto" (by a strong impression), or to the consumption of tobacco and alcohol by the father; and the food wishes of the pregnant woman, not fulfilled by the husband or other family members.

The women interviewed during the study "Genders and Generations: Reproductive Behavior of the Mayans of Yucatan, Mexico", elaborated by Judith Ortega Canto, described that their husbands maintain a cooperative attitude during pregnancy helping them in the heavy tasks and always as companions in the interview with the "sobadora" or the doctor.

For their part, the men reported that the physical changes characteristic of pregnancy were attractive to them, keeping the desire in their partner and strengthening the love for them. Such affection and support is also transferred to the moment of delivery, since the male participates actively and helps his wife at the time of giving birth. For the Maya man, pregnancy is a source of male pride.
