According to the Faculty of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) The differences by gender in the type and consumption of the different substances considered as addictive are due to a series of factors, including biological, social and cultural factors.

In the case of men, characteristics such as social pressure, acceptance and the need to belong to a group are determining factors for the consumption of certain addictive substances.

 

The figures reveal ...

In GetQoralHealth , and with figures from the National Survey of Addictions (ENA, 2011) we present the main addictions of the male sex.

1. Alcohol. According to investigations of Wagoner Center for the Research on Alcohol and Addictions of the University of Texas in the United States, alcohol reduces the conscious ability to remember; however, the subconscious does remember and also learns. This evidence contradicts the typical phrase "I drink alcohol to forget".

2. Tobacco. Although smoking occurs more in men; a study of University of Tromso in Norway, it indicates that it harms more the feminine health. This study indicates that although women smoke less, they are more likely to have colon cancer.

3. Marijuana. Studies published in the magazine Cell , indicate that marijuana affects short-term memory, due to its main psychoactive ingredient: THC (tetrahydrocannabinol)

4. Cocaine. A study conducted by the Institute of Clinical Neuroscience of the University of Cambridge and published in the magazine Molecular Psychiatry , reveals that people addicted to cocaine have a greater loss of brain gray matter.

5. Inhalable. According to National Council of Education for Life and Work (Conevyt), The use of inhalable fumes causes irritation of the nose, pharynx or mouth, loss of balance, dizziness and changes in the perception of reality.
 

 

New addictions?
