In Mexico, 51.8 million people are economically active, that is, they receive a salary or remuneration for a certain activity, as indicated by figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). However, beyond coexistence, a large part of these workers face a problem that harms their health: heat inside the office.
The human being has natural mechanisms to regulate the body heat, But when these fail, negative effects on the body can occur: Cramps in the muscles of the abdomen and extremities due to the loss of salts and electrolytes, sensation of exhaustion due to body dehydration, which leads to intense thirst, headache, Vertigo, tiredness, irritability, hypotension, tachycardia and hyperventilation.
In addition to climate change, the heat that is concentrated in the offices can be caused by lack of adequate ventilation, prolonged use of machines (computers) or because there are many people in the same place.
To prevent the high temperatures in your workplace affect your health, here we give you some suggestions with information about Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality.
1. Drink plenty of water or liquids without waiting to be thirsty. Unless there is a medical contraindication. Avoid alcoholic beverages, coffee, tea or cola and very sugary ones.
2. Lower the blinds so you will avoid direct sunlight. Do not open the windows when the outside temperature is higher.
3. Rest well. Avoid using machines and appliances that can produce heat in the hottest part of the day.
4. Make light meals. These help you replace the salts lost by sweat (salads, fruits, vegetables or juices).
5. Traditional methods. The fans only move the air from one place to another, they do not produce it. Opt for a fan.
6. Wear light clothing If you work in a place with little ventilation, ideally, dress lightly and do not overheat. Dresses, skirts and blouses are a good option for this time.
7. Try to get up from your desk. A number of breaks in a cool space can not only help you regulate the temperature, it can also stimulate your creativity.
An accelerated work pace, lack of rest or recovery periods, excessive production norms or quotas, and lack of acclimatization periods also contribute to the risk of diseases related to hot. Remember that your health is in your hands. Beware!
