Technology improves the control of Diabetes

The study was conducted in the Family Medical Unit # 27 of the Mexican Social Security Institute in Tijuana, and it consisted of following up, for 10 months, 300 people divided into three groups:

The first group had access to an educational program on Diabetes called Sweet Project.

The second group had access to this educational program plus the support of technology, a glucometer (MyGlucoHealth) and a 3G cell phone. With them people could send their records of glucose Physicians and other qualified personnel and received voice messages and alerts to help them keep glucose under control. In addition to that they had access to educational videos.

The third group or control group received only standard medical care. At the end of the 10 months it was observed that the group that had access to technology was the one that had a more significant decrease in the tests of glycosylated hemoglobin , test that is used as a marker to know how well you have controlled the Diabetes , so it can be concluded that technology is an excellent tool to have an adequate management of the disease.

What was the results?

  • The first group managed to reduce its glycosylated hemoglobin at less than 3.1 percentage points at 4 months and at less than 2.63 at 10 months.
  • The second group managed to reduce their glycosylated hemoglobin by less than 3.37 percentage points at 4 months and at less than 3.02 at 10 months.
  • The third group managed to reduce their glycosylated hemoglobin by less than 1.2 percentage points at 4 months and at less than 1.3 at 10 months.
  • It should be noted that reducing a glycosylated hemoglobin point can reduce the risk of suffering up to 40% complications associated with Diabetes.

This study was published in the magazine Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics , and was carried out with the financial and technological support of Qualcomm Wireless Reach. In addition, the International Community Foundation, the IMSS, the Autonomous University of Baja California, the Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute and United Frontiers participated.
