Steps to follow to protect an older adult

We have all been taught in drills how to evacuate danger zones in the middle of an earthquake, but few know how to react when helping an elderly person, be it family or neighbor

The MOST important thing in an evacuation plan is to designate those responsible to support vulnerable people, that is, the elderly, children, the sick, pregnant women, the disabled or people with nervous problems.

Once the danger has passed, if possible, older adults should stay with a family member, partner or nurse.

Steps to follow to protect an older adult

The most important thing is to check the health status of the person, contact your doctor or health service.

  1. Identify signs of psychological distress (agitation, apathy, anger, anxiety, confusion, loss of memory, feeling of loss of notion of time, isolation, etc).
  2. Try to convey a sense of security and calm, support and talk.
  3. Solve your doubts and provide comfort if necessary.
  4. Try to accompany him in a safe area and if it is necessary not to return home, look for a shelter nearby.
  5. It is good to confirm if you take medication and check if you have your next dose at hand.
  6. At home, rails or support points can be installed, because the feeling of dizziness can continue a couple of days.
