Secretary of Health creates a midwife position

The Health Secretary (Ssa) notified the creation and registration of the technical midwife with the code M02117, before the fact that the work of these professionals is essential to improve the health of women in general and reduce mortality and maternal morbidity, announced the Secretary of Health, José Ángel Córdova Villalobos .

The humanized delivery model developed by midwives and the work they have done is very important in keeping maternal and infant mortality rates low, he stressed.

He recalled that within the Millennium Development Goals, one of the most important commitments is the reduction of maternal mortality and in that sense, last year for the first time the lowest figure was achieved, reaching less than a thousand maternal deaths for every 100 thousand births, which equals 49.2 deaths; however, the commitment is to reach 22.5.

In this context, it is promoted avoid the unnecessary practice of cesareans , because it is a risk factor for maternal death that in some institutions reaches 65% and in the private sphere up to 80%.

The Comprehensive Strategy to accelerate the decrease in maternal mortality in Mexico highlights the inclusion of professional midwives and obstetric nurses to achieve a professionalized delivery service in rural communities.

Córdova Villalobos pointed out that the Healthy Pregnancy program is an extension of Medical Insurance for a New Generation, with the purpose of affiliating Popular insurance to all pregnant women and give them free care before, during and after the gestation stage.

At the same time it operates in the obstetric emergency care, so that those who have some complication during pregnancy, delivery or puerperium can be treated for free in the hospital units of the IMSS, ISSSTE or Ministry of Health, whether or not beneficiaries or insured .
