Experts point out that eating too fast decreases the release of certain hormones responsible for satiety in our body; If you eat fast, you tend to get fatter.
Researchers of the Laiko General Hospital in Athens , discovered that certain intestinal hormones are released during meals to generate the sensation of satiety in the brain. Therefore, they conducted a study to find out if the speed of feeding affects the production of these hormones.
In the study, all the volunteers ate 300 milliliters of ice cream at different speeds. When they finished, their levels of glucose, insulin, lipids, and intestinal hormones in the blood were measured seven times, at intervals of 30 minutes.
As a result, those who ate their ice cream more slowly, had higher levels of intestinal hormones, so they felt more satisfied.
The conclusion reached is that people who eat faster, due to work and lifestyle pressures, are more likely to gain weight, since intestinal hormones do not send the signal of satiety to the brain.
This confirms that eating slowly is not a myth, but a reality to reduce the risk of being overweight or obese.
