Rescue dogs, a chance to live

His presence offers company, comfort and influences the creation and strengthening of emotional ties. However, their role within human existence is not only limited to the emotional aspect, but can also help save lives; example, rescue dogs.

After the explosion in the Tower of Pemex, Federal Police, Army and rescue bodies used about 50 dogs for the search and rescue of victims buried in the debris left by the accident.

The image of this canine group is not new in the country, because after the earthquake of 1985, which would devastate the Federal District, rescue dogs became essential elements to save lives.

For this reason, 1987 students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics of the UNAM They created the first canine search and rescue group in Mexico. Currently, this is incorporated into the Intervention Unit of the Directorate of Civil Protection, under the General Directorate of General Services.

Dogs that are trained for this type of work must have certain characteristics:

- excellent smell
- Quiet character
- motivation for the game
- sociability
- medium-sized dogs and dogs of protection and grazing are more used

Between the guide and the dog there must be a very strong relationship of friendship, because of this link depends the success of the couple to locate and save the life of a person.

A dog, unlike a machine, can detect the presence of a body 5 to 8 meters below the surface.

Its field of action is very extensive: natural catastrophes, earthquakes and hurricanes, and even disasters caused by the hand of man as explosions.

Currently search and rescue dogs can be classified into two groups: tracking and venting. The first, as the name implies, follows the trace of a person from point A to point B. They need an object or place of departure.

In the case of the veteo, look for the human smell that is in the air. This type of dog is the most used to look for victims in landslides, avalanches or corpses of drowned people.

The rescue dogs they are a very useful tool for human beings, so we must encourage training, in order to avoid tragedies due to the lack of human rescue teams. It is the best and most valuable help that man's best friend can offer.
