Psychotherapy helps to improve symptoms of depression

The psychotherapy , as a component for treatment against depression, not only has proven to reduce anxiety, but also improve levels of hormonal stress in the patient, according to studies published in the journal Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics.

The study published by Health Day found that when pharmacotherapy goes hand in hand with a little psychotherapy when dealing with depression in individuals, there is an improvement in the levels of cortisol hormone .

After examining more than 60 patients with a severe depressive disorder, the researchers divided the participants into two groups, one received therapy, in conjunction with pharmacotherapy, and the other received only pharmacotherapy.

The depressive symptoms of patients were measured daily for the next 8 months.

The researchers found that although the symptoms of depression decreased in both groups, by the eighth month, the decrease in anxiety was much greater among those who had followed the treatment that combined the two types of therapies , compared to those who were only treated with one.

The conclusions indicate that there is a better result in patients who try pharmacotherapy in conjunction with the psychotherapy , to reduce anxiety and obtain lasting positive effects at the levels of stress hormone, cortisol.
