Psychology is indispensable in the progress of a country

The fundamental role of psychologist is to help society develop in a healthy way, contribute to human growth and prevent the inadequate development of man in his environment . Therefore, his profession is essential for the progress of any country, said Isabel Reyes Lagunes , professor emeritus of the Faculty of Psychology (FP) of the UNAM.

One of the great contributions of this discipline is the understanding of culture and man within it, as well as understanding that each individual is different and, therefore, their behavior is also different, he stressed.

The psychology of health, he said, is one of the contributions made by Mexican specialists. "With this, it is shown that this field has expanded and covers new areas of competence, with useful applications such as health information and education , and participation in environmental health ”.

 

The branches of psychology

The psychologist explained that there are 6 major branches: the experimental , that works in laboratories; the educational , which is dedicated to finding the best methods for learning; Of the health , to prevent problems of psychological and physical nature; the social , that studies from the family group, to the universal or a whole country.

Also, the labor , in charge of observing human behavior in this area and of companies, and neuropsychology, whose function is to analyze the effects that an injury, damage or anomalous functioning in the structures of the system causes on the cognitive, psychological, emotional and behavioral processes individual.

 

History of Psychology

In 1896, newly recognized this subject as science in the world , a reference chair was created in the National Preparatory School; Later, in 1910, the date on which the character of National was given to the University, the person in charge of giving the inaugural lecture was James Baldwin, important American psychologist, he recalled Reyes Lagunes .

By 1924, the PhD in Psychology at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters (FFyL) of this house of studies, and in 1930, the master's degree was established. Thus, in the 50s began a greater interest on the part of young people in the field, and at the end of that decade, the University Council approved the psychology program as a career.
