Profile of alcoholism in Mexico

The proportion of the Mexican population that abuses or is dependent on alcohol is very high, there are just over four million Mexicans who meet the criteria to fit the profile to suffer a disorder linked to alcohol. More than 3 million are men and more than half a million are women, according to the 2008 National Survey of Addictions.

Among Mexicans, the typical consumption pattern is of large quantities per occasion of consumption. Almost 27 million Mexicans between 12 and 65 years old drink with this pattern and have consumption frequencies that go between less than once a month and daily consumption. That is, although they drink infrequently, when they do they ingest large amounts of alcohol , according to statistical data of the ENA.

Among the results, it is pointed out that men tend to drink more than women, however the consumption of alcoholic beverages in the Female population is increasing , especially among young people.

The age group that shows the highest levels of consumption, both in men and women, is 18 to 29 years old, and these levels tend to decrease as the population grows.

This type of risk behavior has an origin that arises from difficulties in the family nucleus , followed by fights, labor problems and to a lesser extent by the loss of employment.
